Independent and impartial judiciary

An independent, impartial judiciary, which operates without interference from the other branches of government or from private or political interests, is one of the pillars of a democratic society.

The courts protect the rights of the individual and the society at large. They are a safeguard against abuses of power by those in authority, holding all citizens equally accountable and providing thereby a bulwark against totalitarianism.
